I had multiple people recommend Rachel Hollis’s Girl Wash Your Face but it was not for me. It probably isn’t for your either unless you’re a wealthy white woman who is incredibly devout as well as a bit holier than thou. Hollis has artfully mastered the humble brag in Girl Wash Your Face and the whole book is congratulating herself on basically having it all while pretending that she struggles with the same struggles regular folk do and that No, Really she doesn’t have it all. I should note that, for all my social media consumption, I am not a fan of bloggers in the least. I deal with a lot of small time bloggers at my job so I’ve never really fallen under the spell that so many people have. I’d never even heard of Hollis before reading her memoir based on these recommendations and, truthfully, her cute title.
“You must choose to be happy, grateful, and fulfilled. If you make that choice every single day, regardless of where you are or what’s happening, you will be happy.”
Hollis is also just a bit too churchy for me. It’s her book and I would never begrudge someone their personal spiritual beliefs but it was just a bit too heavy handed for me and since I wasn’t prepared for all the preachiness it was a bit irksome. She spouts a lot of text book, feel good sentiments that rang a bit hollow for me and overall her writing style was not my cup of tea. Maybe she really is the super perky woman who believes that all women are full of untapped potential that this book will help unleash and I am just a raging cynic these days but overall this was disappointing.
Also the stuff about her marriage, their bizarre courtship and the intimacies of their sex life were all things I could have done without…
I got this book as a gift and read about the first 1/4 and kept thinking, “Maybe the good part is coming up?” Thus far, it’s just one big humblebrag and isn’t even cleverly written. I’m out. Agree with your take completely
