It’s storming outside, but inside we are snug and reading!

September 12, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Sam Usher knows how to create great illustrations. They tell the story without his text to compliment them. I usually am not a fan of wordless picture books, but Usher would be a great candidate for that genre. With that said his book Storm is a text and illustration treat.

The grandfather and grandson are back for another adventure in Storm. This time they want to fly a kite as it is so windy and ready for a good storm. Of course, they have to find it first. As they search the house, they find items that bring up memories of past adventures. And while that is happening inside, Usher shows you the crazy fun (or maybe not so fun) some of the other characters of the story are having outside. Eventually, they find the kite, and the fun they have flying it is their new adventure. Afterwards, when it is too windy, and the storm is too much for them to handle, they fly home to make a grand landing and go inside to enjoy the warm and relive their tales of wonder. Where there are some fun details to see (the boy sitting on books to make him tall enough to reach the table).

There is a lot going on for the adult’s eye while the child can enjoy the colors and the story. Usher mixes the text and the art into a delightful story to be read before bed or even during a stormy day. It also is one of a companion set of seasonal books.
