Louise is a brave, fearless, feathered chicken. Yes. Chicken.

September 17, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Louise wants adventure. So, she leaves her cozy home and journey out into the wide world. She finds pirates, sunken ships, ferocious lions, circus fun and one exotic land where her sister chickens are held captive!

Yes, chickens. Louise is a brave, fearless, feathered chicken.

Kate DiCamillo and Harry Bliss had teamed up before Good Rosie! with Louise, The Adventures of a Chicken. The great humor of DiCamillo’s text is paired with the signature humorous illustrations of Bliss. Our fearless Louise’s story is set up in chapters, but still in the picture book format. This unique format allows for a slightly longer book to be read a little at a time, therefore allowing itself to be adaptable to most ages. About an 8 or 9-year-old could start reading on their own as well.

The adult reader will get entertained as well. There are much to the illustrations in the way of detailed surprises, helping to move the story along by saying things without words and just the wonderful light-heartedness mixed with the “scary” adventure. Plus, there is the humor of Louise just “ho-hum yes, I was just here and there” when she comes back to tell her tales to her friends. However, for the very young child you might need to skip a few words or a few pictures. There is a bit maturity to the pirate scene that could be concerning to that more sensitive reader. However, as an adult that was an interesting, realistic twist to that part of the tale.
