CBR Bingo(x4) Snubbed

October 25, 2018 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

“I lost a Tony award to Broadway legend Audra McDonald when I was twelve so I’ve been a bitter bitch since before my first period.”

Anna Kendrick seems like the ideal author for “snubbed” because she has not only lost a Goodreads Choice award she has also lost a Tony, an Oscar, Golden Globe and SAG award. She did beat Ryan Reynolds for best Twitter personality at this year’s Kid’s Choice Awards so she is doing alright. I’d previously read Scrappy Little Nobody but for my reread I went with her self narrated audio-book which was great. Kendrick has a very conversational writing style which is buoyed by her narration.

Scrappy Little Nobody is a collection of essays about Kendrick’s childhood and unusual rise to fame. Despite her early Broadway stardom Kendrick doesn’t come off as a typical former child star but rather a ball of neuroses who happens to act and sing well. She had a relatively normal childhood despite her early successes and she maintains a pretty low key lifestyle for a celebrity. A lot of her dating stories could have been written by any sardonic millennial but they have an added layer of humor coming from a well known celebrity.

“So many people say they wish they could be young again. You couldn’t drag me back to twenty-one. All the hiding, all the pretending, all the hanging out with people you don’t actually like.”

I like that she admits doing movies like the Twilight series in order to stay afloat financially while she does more fulfilling independent films like Drinking Buddies but I feel like in the two years since Scrappy Little Nobody was written Kendrick hasn’t really done much of note, although I can’t fault her for getting that sweet, sweet Dreamworks money by lending her voice to Trolls. For all the good things I hope for Anna my biggest wish is that she will stop with the Pitch Perfect franchise. You’re just so much better than that Anna.
