Rachel Isadora has created a reading and visual gem for the younger crowd with My Dog Laughs. The children and their dogs show how varied dogs are, as well as their owners. Each page shows how dogs make mistakes, give kisses, make friends, fart, eat and laugh. Each page shows there are tall, short, fluffy and all kinds of dogs. Yet, sometimes dogs look the same, too. Isadora shows how people take care of and love their canine buddies. Without being pushy, Isadora also shows how the owners sometimes look like their pet and sometimes not so much (one child is in a wheelchair). And by this, shows that anyone can have a dog.
Each of the different things is broken up into a “chapter” or section such as “I love my Dog” and “My Dog Plays.” This can help you the parent say “okay up to section Going out with my Dog” when you just cannot read it for the 100th time again.
The colors are bright and fun. The images themselves are not very detailed and in fact, are not “fully fleshed out” due to the multiple images on each page. Three or four things can be going on at the same time. If you know, I Hear a Pickle you will know how the images play out.
Kids will love the funny images (the kid holding their nose when the dog has farted) and adults might wonder, “Why did they have to not only show the dog squatting, but show a not so little, piece of poop?”
