Abner and Ian try to get it right (side up)

Dave Eggers has at least two new books for kids this year with Abner & Ian Get Right-Sided Up is the second one I read. The first, Most Likely Tomorrow was not a huge hit for me story wise, but I enjoyed the illustrations greatly. However, I enjoyed the story immensely more than Abner & Ian. I was amazed that both books were done by the same author considering how radically different the stories are. Plus, they are being publisher by two different publishers and that was odd for me.

The story of Abner and Ian is awkward. There is no real action. They do not do anything, other than “bounce” around the page and get in worse situations then they started. Which, Eggers never explains how that happens in the first place. Not all kids or adults, will understand this lack-of-action. Yet, the active child will like that they can “shake the book” about. Therefore, this might not be the best idea for bed time as it might get your child “shaken up” as well.

Laura Park’s illustrations are another story. Park does not have any real story to work with, other than the fact Ian and Abner do find themselves in some unique positions after a couple shake ups. One amusing moment is when the two of them are coming out of the “spine centerfold” and they ask each other about “feeling their stomachs” and fun word play occurs.  The illustrations colors are muted. There is very little variety. But they are enjoyable. Ian is partially a fun character to look at.
