This was such a great read! I was familiar with Bagieu’s work from back when she had her blog (Ma vie est tout à fait fascinante) but had never read one of her books. Needless to say, I am going to remedy that ASAP.
Brazen is a collection of graphic bios of women who refused to live according to the rules imposed by society. Some of them are very famous, some of them have been forgotten by history, but all of them paved the way for women today. The illustrations are relatively simple but full of life and energy and the colors are sublime. At the end of each bio, there is a double page illustration that is absolutely worth the price of admission even if you read these comic strips on the Le Monde website (where they originally appeared in France).

I adore this book, I bought my own copy to keep forever and revisit! You might also like Bygone, Badass Broads by Mackenzie Lee. It’s not a graphic novel, but it has beautiful illustrations and short chapters on more of history’s forgotten women. There is some crossover with the women highlighted in Brazen, but many bios that aren’t included too.
Thanks for the recommendation, I looked it up and the Kindle version was $2.99 so I bought it immediately! The illustrations are gorgeous…
I look forward to your review!
I also just got another similar book, the one that the Feminist Frequency gal recently did, History Vs. Women. It’s not as nice to look at as Brazen and Bygone Badass Broads, but I’m curious to see who she chose to feature.
I really want to get this, but can’t really justify it right now. I doubt the Norwegian public library will have a copy, either. Will just have to add it to my wish list for a later date.
Have you checked Google Play Books? If you have a big enough screen, this is a great alternative for comics and graphic novels for those of us outside the US.
