Little Fox in the Snow is a beautiful, realistic story of what a fox does (hunts mice, rabbits, explores and more). This is a refreshing twist to modern stories. Jonathan London tells you this is what a fox is. They are an animal that preys on the mouse and rabbit. However, it is done tastefully. You know the fox will eat the mouse and rabbit (London tells you this) but it is not “blood guts and gore.” The fact that the fox has an enemy (the wolverine) is shown by London, along with Daniel Miyares illustrations, that this is not your Hugh Jackman Wolverine. Oh, it has long sharp claws, but is not as nearly cuddly.
Even though the text is rhyming with a soft bounce to it, it is real. It is what a winter’s day looks like in the wild or in the forest. Due to the more realistic images and context, this book might not be for the very young. However, it is something that can be adapted to most ages and that even includes adults.
If you are a Froggy fan, you will probably not enjoy this as they are two different styles of writing. Froggy is fun, light heart, and this Fox is scientific without being too academic.
The artwork is a perfect companion to the text. Bright, rich colors that are not overpowering. There is just enough detail for you to see what the fox’s world looks like, without taking away from the story or the focus on the fox.
