Passing with flying color

January 17, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Penguin Flies Home.  Okay. As did a lot of penguins over the years. What makes this one special Lita Judge? The illustrations make the “Penguins do not fly” story unique. Even though Lynn Munsinger comes to mind when viewing them.

This is a companion book to Flight School. While it helps to have read Flight School, this is a stand-alone story. It is a sweet story about being yourself and that you can be friends with people even if they have different dreams then you do. There are sweet illustrations as well. The colors are fabulous. They have fun details. The end pages are delightful. The scrapbook and yearbook pictures are a fun way to start and end the book.  But overall the story is obvious. Not to say it is a bad story, just predictable.

Perhaps the best part of Lita Judge’s work is, if you do not like this one, try something else. Her work is delightful. Not only does she have her own works, such as Red Sled, she has illustrated other books as well, such as S Is for S’Mores: A Camping Alphabet. Each one is unique, but she does have a bit of a style once you realize who the illustrator is.

And yes, while Penguin is sweet, and I do just want to squeeze the fish out of him, I am leaning towards Tacky being my main penguin for the “being different” story (after all, who can resist a penguin in a Hawaiian shirt?)
