I probably should not admit to this, but I am not a Pete the Cat fan. I know I am in the minority there as James Dean’s books fly off our selves at work. There seems to be one for every holiday. We even had a plush Pete doll before the holidays this year.
Therefore, I must admit I was not expecting a lot from Pete the Cat’s Groovy Guide to Love. I thought perhaps it might be a fun Valentine’s Day gift for a young cousin but did not expect to like it. And while it is a nice gift, I am not sure it is really meant for the age of the child Pete is usually aimed at.
This time, there are famous sayings about love with James Dean’s illustrations of that beloved, crazy cat Pete. Also included are sassy sayings by Pete himself about love or a saying that is the interpretation of what the famous quote is about. But that is it. There are illustrations of Pete doing things (sailing, hanging with friends, and more), but they are not things that go along with a story. There are things just for that page. There is no action to the story. Pete just gives you little nuggets of wisdom.
These nuggets include wisdom from the likes of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Vincent van Goh, Virgil, Ovid and Charles Dickens. As Pete shares their and his “groovy words” with you, you, see how you too can live “an awesome life filled with love.”
Pete the Cat is decidedly okay to me. My kids have both gone through phases of liking them, though. My daughter just moved on to Junie B. Jones and she is not my friend at all!
