Picked this up at the library and enjoyed it. Cassandra Cain alias Orphan is a very interesting character in the DC Rebirth Universe and this particular graphic novel expands her character for the first time since her intro back in the Batman: Eternal books. Ras Al Ghul shows up to make veiled hints about things that he is up to and Cassandra gets a mother. Everybody gets beat up and our heroes save the day. Looks like this particular series is going down a magic […]
Great little book, Stupid name
I love Catherynne Valente’s prose. She is just plain brilliant. But I can’t for the life of me figure out why they decided to call this book “Six-Gun Snow White” when hundreds of other, non-cheesier titles were available. Written in cornpone dialogue in 3rd person, this book reads like someone transcribed a story by Gabby Hayes. All the things you might be looking for in a western reboot of the Snow White Myth are slightly here. Very well done and entertaining. Ending is kind of […]
A Liar walks into a Castle and finds a Monty Python Sketch
I really enjoyed this book – until the end. It has a very whimsical nature and what reads like (in my mind, at least) a very dry, British humor. The audiobook of this should be a gas. I love the way that DeWitt has written the dialogue between the characters. It has a very cinematic flow that made it a joy to read, all arched eyebrows and nuanced looks. While not a capital-F Fantasy, this is still sort of in that realm, but shoulders into […]
A saddening letdown with a few bright spots
I didn’t know anything about this series but when I saw it on the shelf I got very excited. Unfortunately, the graphic novel did not live up to any of my expectations. Slapdash and far too cutesy for my liking, I was hoping for grand mythmaking on the level of Gaiman’s Sandman series but it just wasn’t up to the task. There IS a good story in here but the writers and artists just couldn’t pull it together.
