About ChainedVase

CBR 8
CBR 9

I spend most of my waking hours reading and re-reading picture books to my 2 demanding Squishies, about which I have strong opinions (both the books and the Squishies). I hope to actually read some grown up books this year, but I probably won't feel as passionately about them as I do the children's books, to be fair.

ChainedVase's Reviews:

Perspective matters.

I read and review a LOT of picture books. Clearly I have many opinions on this topic. I can’t even blame my current lifestyle of Squishie Wrangler- I’ve always collected picture books, the only difference is now I have to share them. Books are precious and magic. They need to be amazing and special to inspire a child’s imagination. I have 3 criteria for a picture book: 1) beautiful illustrations 2) lyrical language 3) powerful message. I think the illustrations can be as complex or […]

Just be Yourself… unless you can be a Unicorn, then be a Unicorn.

So obviously we all want to be unicorns. Unicorns are special and magical and made of glitter and sparkles. I got this book for Little Squishie, who is a magical sparkle unicorn of a child. She is the most Herself person I know, and even though she is only 3 years old, I never want her to lose that sense of herself as special and magical. I’m not sure about this book though. The more we read it, the less I like the message. The […]

Dream the impossible, make it possible

January 8, 2017 by ChainedVase 1 Comment

I come from a large family of bookish people, so when we gather for Xmas, we exchange books for all the small ones. My older Squishie is fascinated by Space, so this book was an obvious choice for him. It’s a wonderful, inspirational book about facing your fears and living your dreams. –Side note: there is no Jakku in this book. Older Squishie is constantly looking for info about Jakku in his Space books and is convinced that maybe I’m just not that good at […]

Life in the Wild

January 4, 2017 by ChainedVase 2 Comments

There was once a bear filled with so much love that whenever he came across another living thing, he would give it a hug. He hugged all his bewildered friends and startled acquaintances, but he mostly loved to hug trees. The trees seemed to like it better than the animals, to be fair. The illustrations in this simple story are amazing at portraying the feelings of surprise and shock on the faces of the random animals the bear aggressively hugs. Eventually he comes across a […]
