I like books, but I'm SUPER picky about them. To clarify- a three star rating means that I liked the book and found nothing objectionable in it. As 3 is the average between 1 and 5 this means the book is an average read, perfectly competent but not outstanding.

BINGO! Or Rose becomes a Real Girl and hates it.

Those of you who pay attention to my reviews (and I’m not saying you should) really shouldn’t be surprised that my So Shiny slot will be a book by Seanan McGuire. I tend to read her books either on their release date, or shortly thereafter. Her books are always, always pre-order status for me (less so the books written under Mira Grant, and I’m not sure why but they just don’t appeal to me in quite the same way). This one took me a little […]

Not With a Bang but an Ice Nine Whimper

August 28, 2018 by melanir Leave a Comment

I have a rather large back log of books to review and, I’m not gonna lie, I’ve been trying to squeeze them into as many bingo slots as possible. So when I went looking for author birthdays I was completely delighted when I found Kurt Vonnegut had been born on November 11th. This places him within the required time line and Cat’s Cradle fills the Birthday slot on my bingo card (and guys, I’m so close to Bingo). So this book, like a lot of […]

Robot Rebellion

August 27, 2018 by melanir 1 Comment

The Alchemy Wars is a series by Ian Tregillis about conscious robots enslaved to humanity and the rebellion that sets them free. As a trilogy of books this review will fill two slots on my bingo card (it’s not cheating, IT’S NOT). The Mechanical, as the first book, will fill the And So It Begins Slot and The Liberation, as the final book, will fill the This is the End slot. I’m going to try to avoid spoilers, but as I am reviewing all three […]

Belief in mysteries—all manner of mysteries—is the only lasting luxury in life.

The Witches of Worm was nominated for a Newbery Award in 1973, but ultimately lost to Julie of the Wolves. It is still one of the creepiest books I can remember reading, yes even Goosbumps or Scary Tales to Tell in the Dark, partly because the horror was all psychological. Anyway, I wanted to see if the book still holds up so I reread it this weekend, and boy does it. As an old favorite this fills the Throwback Thursday slot on my Bingo card. […]
