I read to escape and to be entertained for awhile. My main choice is historical romance, with a side of mystery from time to time. I don't want any part of dystopian books, or depressing reality tales - there is quite enough of that in the news these days! I'm a social media failure - I don't tweet, Instagram, Tumblr or Facebook - who has the time when there's books to read?

Sisters are doing it for themselves

This is book two in the Hudson Sisters Series – the first book “The Last Chance Matinee” introduced the trio of women who are bound by the terms of their father’s will to restore an old theatre in the small town of Hidden Falls, PA where he grew up.  Two of them, Allie and Des, were shocked to discover that they had a half-sister that they never knew about until the reading of the will.  Cara was his daughter by another woman, and he never […]

A sweet tea of a story

Full disclosure – I’m not a big Jane Austen fan (cue gasps of astonishment), so I went into reading this modern spin on Sense and Sensibility without much expectation.  I had noticed it was reviewed here earlier this month, so when I spotted the copy at the library I was intrigued enough to pick it up.  This book tells the tale of the Woodward sisters, who are left to fend for themselves after their father (convicted of embezzlement) skips the country to avoid jail time.  […]

Beneath the facade of glitz and glamour

“The scandalous, headline-making, and enthralling friendship between literary legend Truman Capote and peerless socialite Babe Paley.” This is a fictional telling of the socialite “Swans” of the 1950s and early 1960s that focuses mainly on Barbara “Babe” Paley, and her friendship with Truman Capote; however it includes many other famous women such as Slim Keith, C. Z. Guest, Gloria Guinness, Gloria Vanderbilt, and Pamela Churchill.  These are the fabulously wealthy ladies who lunch, dress to impress, marry often and love to gossip.  The era was […]

Outlander meets Criminal Minds

When brilliant FBI agent Kendra Donovan stumbles back in time and finds herself in a 19th century English castle under threat from a vicious serial killer, she scrambles to solve the case before it takes her life—200 years before she was even born. This was certainly not a book to take seriously – think of a wallpaper historical novel with a modern day heroine who just doesn’t fit in, nor does she seem to care to.  Kendra Donovan is supposedly a child prodigy; she went […]
