I’ve been in the mood for classic horror paperbacks lately. I recently read Whitley Strieber’s Hunger trilogy and liked the first book, so thought I’d try two more of his earlier works. His first book. The Wolfen, was written in 1978. It follows two New York City police officers, Rebecca Neff and George Wilson, who try to solve a seemingly unsolvable case — the brutal attack of two fellow officers. All the signs seem to point to an animal attack, but not just any ordinary animal. […]
Cop culture in the 1970s
After all the violence in the last book, I almost didn’t bother with this one; however, it was much less bloody but not without its gritty realism. The book is set in the 1970s, with a madman on the loose targeting cops and a police force that is in turmoil. This is the world that Kate Murphy has stepped into – it’s her first day on the job and she isn’t prepared for the harsh reality of a macho environment. There aren’t many women on […]
Some People Call Him The Space Vampire
Apparently they made a movie about this called Lifeforce but I’ve never seen it. It sounds like from reading reviews that the movie is way better than the book, so maybe you want to go watch the movie instead of reading this book? There are some astronauts who find an alien ship that is full of what looks like corpses in suspended animation, and they start trying to study them. The bodies are humanoid but are obviously alien and seem to be dead. But then […]
The Interestings, maybe not so Interesting, but still compelling
This was my first read for the Schaumburg Library book club “Beyond the Book.” This was a great read for a book club because, well, this book was not beloved overall. There were 16 people in the club and I think 4 of us (self included) gave it a 4 out of 5, everyone else did a 3 or lower. But that made for a lively discussion. The Interestings follows a group of friends from when they meet, at an arts camp in the summer […]
