Meh, At Least It’s Short!

July 3, 2017 by Julie 1 Comment

I read this both because my book club assigned it for the month of April and also because I am a Hugo voter and got a free copy of it in the voting packet.  I was familiar with Anders’ work, mostly essays and some short stories, and thought this book sounded really interesting from the description.  It was a combination of magic and science, takes place in the SF Bay Area, about modern life with fantastical elements.  Sign me up! But this book kind of […]

For those looking to be terrified by something other than reality right now

January 25, 2017 by Lindzgrl 9 Comments

Imagine, if you will, being suddenly blinded and forced to navigate the world while protecting your two young children, all while unseen monsters stalk you.   Thus is the premise of Josh Malerman’s debut novel Bird Box. The plot jumps around in time with some chapters taking place several years in the past, when reports of strange and disturbing events in Russia begin filtering onto U.S. news channels. A magical ice apocalypse in Dublin

December 30, 2016 by teresaelectro 1 Comment

After an epic five novels, Karen Marie Moning switches the narrator to Dani “Mega” O’Malley in Iced. The previous entries focused on MacKayla “Mac” Lane, new to all things magic and unknowingly gifted with magical powers to fight  evil & SEXY AF fairy princes who want to destroy our world. These Unseelie princes nearly do by tearing a hole between their magical dimension and ours to let in all kinds of nasty monsters. During her battles against the apocalypse, Mac befriends a 13 year old girl named Dani […]

I always feel like a chump for having zero magical powers when clearly the world is full of magicians and superpowered beings!

The Everything Box is superfun! I added it to my library queue after some happy Cannonball Read reviews, and am so glad I did. I read almost this entire book in one sitting. I would best describe this as Neil Gaiman Lite, which is NOT a criticism. There is a richness missing that would make it a full Gaiman experience, but sometimes you don’t need the bone marrow spread on top of the rib-eye on top of cheesy polenta. Sometimes you just want a salad […]
