God Bless the Gargoyles and us, too

September 9, 2018 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

I absolutely love the illustrations in God Bless the Gargoyles. Dav Pilkey has stepped away from his more humorous stories and gone a spiritual and Christian route. The nod to a famous painting also is a neat treat. While the story is religious (the Church, the story of gargoyles and angels), it is not “in your face” overly religious. It is more of a spiritual story. However yet, it is not for a non-believer.   I would have like more history of the gargoyle. It […]

#CBR10 Bingo: Backlog – Outcast

September 3, 2018 by Malin Leave a Comment

3.5 stars #CBR10Bingo: Backlog (has been on my TBR list since June 2013) Riley Carver lives in a little town somewhere in the Southern USA. For the past six years, on a particular day, angels come from the heavens and take away some of the townspeople. One year ago, the angels took Riley’s best friend, almost boyfriend, Chris. So she’s refusing to to leave the house (even though the whole town is supposed to the public celebration – or face strong censure), and when she sees […]

Plutonium may give you grief for thousands of years, but arsenic is forever.

It may help to understand human affairs to be clear that most of the great triumphs and tragedies of history are caused, not by people being fundamentally good or fundamentally bad, but by people being fundamentally people. I cannot emphasize enough how much of a treat Good Omens is. Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett will also tell you how much of a treat it is. They will tell you in their introduction and their afterward how much they wrote it for the love of it […]

Not Your Sunday School Angel

Raphael by R.A. MacAvoy (1984) – Satan, disgusted at being cast out of heaven and forced to dwell on the lower planes among humans, blames his brother Raphael.  He has a plan to bring him to ruin by using a young lute-player and friend of Raphael’s to force the angel to lower his heavenly defenses. Saara, a powerful witch watching over Gaspare, holds the Liar to blame for killing Gaspare’s teacher and her lover, and attacks when Satan shows up in her lover’s form.  She […]
