Nesting

September 9, 2014 by NTE Leave a Comment

Nest is the debut work by author Esther Ehrlich, and it is a touching, tender piece of children’s fiction. Sixth grader Naomi “Chirp” Orenstein lives on cozy Cape Cod with her family – Mom, Dad, older sister, Rachel – and always has. And she has no idea just how many things in her comfortable life are about to change, when her mom falls ill and things start unraveling. The book is split into two halves – The first half of the book is set in […]

The Genius Files: You Almost Get Killed Thrice

August 24, 2014 by Ewandini 1 Comment

The Genius Files #3: You Only Die Twice was the third book in the Genius Files series. I forgot to review the second one because I was pretty sure I already did. In this book, they have a new villain, an evil Elvis impersonator. Let me just say, the book ends with a bang, a very big bang. And with one notable exception (which I’m not sure would have actually changed for me all that much if I’d read it the old fashioned way […]

The Book About Basically the Same Thing as The Invention of Hugo Cabret, But This Is a Very Bad Book

May 26, 2014 by Ewandini 2 Comments

You know Brian Selznick as the person who wrote The Invention of Hugo Cabret, but this is his less famous book. It’s the same basic idea as The Invention of Hugo Cabret, except it’s a brother and a sister who are orphans, and instead a train station, they are living in their parents’ old house. They make a machine which can pull part of itself off to make an object float in the air. Pretty great idea, right?, but poor execution. When I read the book […]
