This book made me thirsty.

I read a lot of dystopian fiction. I have read about the super flu, zombies, the earth’s rotation slowing down, nuclear wastelands, and government created vampires. This was my first foray into dystopia via climate change fiction, and parts of it were terrifying. The part that scares me the most in these dystopias are the scenes on the crowded highways. Where are you supposed to go if you can’t get there? These scenes scared me in The Stand and in World War Z — something […]

Improbably, this is my “cover art” selection, because despite a cult podcast with a large following, I had no idea this wasn’t just a standalone book, and gosh is it pretty. Plus, the art suggests something lighthearted or irreverent, and an NPR endorsement on the cover? Good enough for me. Every book is a different hood, a different country, a different world.

Ibi Zoboi’s Pride is a modern retelling of Pride and Prejudice set in Brooklyn. The best adaptations take a familiar story and use it to explore contemporary issues. Once we identify each new character with it’s P&P counterpart, we understand where they fit in the story and then we can move on to the meat of it. We know class is going to be a part of the conflict, and since this is a modernization, we know getting the 5 Benitez sisters married off isn’t a motivation.

Stop getting the British peerage wrong! If you can research the American Civil War, you can easily discover the difference between Royal and non-royal dukes

1.5 stars #CBR10Bingo: Cover Art Spoiler warning! This review will discuss plot points from the book in detail, because it is impossible for me to list the many ways in which this book did not work for me without mentioning them. If you are unfamiliar with Scotland, Edinburgh and couldn’t care less about the British peerage, then maybe these things will not bother you. Nevertheless, be warned that you may get spoilers if you continue with my review after the link to my blog. New York […]
