Even though someone else said it better

September 19, 2018 by CoffeeShopReader 5 Comments

I saw a Goodreads description or review that called Cantero the heir to the Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams throne. Nope to that. The more I think on it, the more I like This Body’s Not Big Enough For Both Of Us, but it’s not the same level of clever, especially since it’s much more limited in the scope of the allusions. The wordplay of Pratchett is not there, nor is the narrative originality, or at least not original in the same way. Cantero’s pretty direct […]

The magick continues

June 26, 2018 by ElCicco Leave a Comment

The detective/noir/occult tale continues! Volume 1 introduced the reader to Rowan Black, Portsmouth Police detective who is also a witch. She has a good relationship with her work partner Morgan and with her friend (lover?) Alexandra Grey, who is also a witch. These relationships are in peril, however, as a series of crimes shows that dark forces are at work, and they are targeting Rowan. The first installment ends with a shadowy group of technologically savvy investigators tracking down Rowan. We cannot yet guess who […]

My First Le Carre

So this book was originally published in the 1960’s I believe.  You can tell only a little bit in my opinion.  Obviously the technology is very dated, and the way of doing things is a little bit too.  It didn’t really bother me though.  I got caught up in the action and the stories.  George Smiley has a lot of stories. This is the first book where Smiley appears.  There’s apparently seven books with him as the main character.  I like him.  It’s really hard […]

Even Idiots Occasionally Speak the Truth Accidentally.

Whose Body?   I discovered Dorothy L. Sayers a few years ago but I have only read a few of her mysteries and all out of order.  For this year’s Cannonball, I’m going to attempt to read them all.  It’s a bit challenging since the books were originally published during the 1920s.  They are popular enough to be easily available in print and ebooks.  However my local library doesn’t stock all of them and this is going to get expensive.  Luckily like even the worst […]
