A historical romance with Highlanders and the Gunpowder plot. Yup, that one.

November 17, 2014 by Malin 7 Comments

It will come as no surprise to anyone who actually bothers to read my blog, or check out my Cannonball progress, that I read a LOT. So much so that, fingers crossed, while I severely doubt I will be able to complete the triple Cannonball this year (it nearly killed all my joy of reading last year), if I actually manage to complete my current backlog of reviews and keep going, I will at least have completed more than two and a half the requirement, […]

What with the visibility of this series lately, I don’t feel that I need to do a lengthy plot recap here — anyone reading this review probably has already read Outlander, or they have a good idea of what it’s about. I’ve had the intention to read it for some time, but spurred by the TV series, I finally dug in and — wow. I completely understand the obsession. I was pleasantly surprised by Monica McCarty’s Campbell trilogy, which includes Highland Warrior (#1), Highland Outlaw (#2), and Highland Scoundrel (#3). They’re all good, steamy romances with a generous helping of clan battles, alliances, betrayals, and feuds that are all actually based on historical events. I personally preferred the second and third books in the series to the first, not because of a marked increase in overall quality, but because I liked the heroines better.  Each of the alpha male heroes were dreamy in their […]

Another Historical Romance, But with Tartan

February 13, 2014 by Mrs. Julien Leave a Comment

There is an entire historical romance sub-genre based around Scottish Highland lairds and the tartans that love them. You can recognize the books instantly by the swathe of kilt and bare, muscular chest on the cover. I don’t read them because I get preoccupied with how cold everyone must be in Northern Scotland. Hitting on two genre quadrants, the new Scandalous Highlanders series from historical romance novelist Suzanne Enoch features members of a Scottish Highland family looking for love in Regency London. It’s kind of […]
