Young adult fiction that’s not about vampires or fanatasy or death…wait, just no vampires or fantasy

August 30, 2014 by genericwhitegirl Leave a Comment

I reluctantly put this book on hold at the library more out of a sense of duty as a book blogger, rather than a real desire to read it. Much like my 9 year old niece’s attitude to the Harry Potter series, I was reluctant to grab my board and join the wave of popularity that surrounded this book (my niece is totally wrong, by the way, but that doesn’t mean I am). I was something like 116th in line at the library. So I […]

Will Grayson, will grayson

June 30, 2014 by Caitlin_D Leave a Comment

I read Will Grayson, Will Grayson on a road trip with my husband, who asked what the book I was reading was about. I told him, and he responded with “Are you bullsh!tting me? Cause I’m not able to tell…” Honestly, saying the plot of Will Grayson, Will Grayson out loud really does ridiculous. WG #1 has a best friend named Tiny (who’s an enormous, black and gay, because it’s a John Green book and he really does like to mix things up) who constantly overshadows him. Will’s theory in life is to stay un-involved from things that might hurt him, so he avoids girls and conflict and all […]

This Star Won’t Go Out

May 12, 2014 by Holly Leave a Comment

It’s difficult to think critically about a book like This Star Won’t Go Out, because it was clearly put together with lots of love by the grieving friends and family of a charming, precocious, and kind sixteen-year-old girl who died from complications with thyroid cancer. So instead I’ll try to give you an idea what it’s like. The book revolves around Ester Earl, who was about as lovely as any fictional book heroine you could imagine. She was funny, thoughtful, self-depricating, creative, kind, friendly, uncomplaining, […]
