Elementary, my dear…self.

August 29, 2018 by Jake 1 Comment

Read as part of CBR10 Bingo: Off a list. https://www.publishersweekly.com/pw/by-topic/industry-news/tip-sheet/article/75892-the-most-anticipated-books-of-spring-2018.html This book should not have worked. A mystery writer inserting their self as a character is bad enough; most detectives are ancillaries for their creators as is. And my personal track record of the-creator-as-character is not good, though it’s limited to Stephen King’s appearance in his Dark Tower series. Yet it does work, at least well enough, because Anthony Horowitz is such a compelling writer. I discovered Horowitz earlier this year with his superb Magpie Murders book. Later, I found […]

CBR Bingo entry Listicles: Goodreads’ Best Show Business Memoirs/Biographies I distinctly remember the first time I saw The Princess Bride. Like most fans, I did not see this cult classic during the original theatrical run, but caught it on VHS (that was pre-DVD for you young-us; DVD was pre-streaming for you toddlers). I was in college, hanging out with a couple of friends in a dorm room when one of them decided we should watch this awesome movie she had recently seen. For the next […]

Wonder Woman

I found this on a list of the Best Wonder Woman comics. https://www.ranker.com/list/best-wonder-woman-comics-storylines/ranker-comics There are many such lists out there. The idea of reading a Wonder Woman comic written by a woman sounded good to me. I wanted to read some of her stories after seeing the amazing movie last year. The problem, of course, is she’s been a comics character since 1941! So every point you “jump into” has a giant back story you don’t know. Not to mention the fact that every 25 […]

#CBR10Bingo: Listicles. From FYA’s “Swoony YA books for your next Beach Vacation” From Goodreads: Romeo and Juliet meets One Hundred Years of Solitude in Emily Henry’s brilliant follow-up to The Love That Split the World, about the daughter and son of two long-feuding families who fall in love while trying to uncover the truth about the strange magic and harrowing curse that has plagued their bloodlines for generations.  In their hometown of Five Fingers, Michigan, the O’Donnells and the Angerts have mythic legacies.
