Everyone should read this book. Especially maybe your mom.

I consider myself fairly (very) liberal and open-minded which for me includes having a broad understanding of issues in America today, including the prevalence and pervasiveness of racism as it relates to being black in America. Obviously as a white woman my experience is one dimensional, and I know that I cannot really understand what it is to walk in the shoes of a black person in America. This book though, this book. Wow. In So You’ve Been Publicly Shamed, journalist Jon Ronson takes a look at some of the people who have become famous for being publicly shamed – people like Justine Sacco, the African Aids tweet woman; Lindsay Stone, who took a photo of herself flipping off a sign at Arlington Cemetery; and various men who’ve been caught in sex scandals […]

There’s also something very satisfying about hearing someone tell stories about their life in their own voice. This book is made up of a series of interconnected stories about his youth in South Africa, from when he was “born a crime,” with […]

I have never had such a hard time getting through a book that I liked. “Liked” actually feels like the wrong word here. How can I say I liked something that made me angry and frustrated almost 100% of the way through, and which filled me with dread every time I tried to convince myself to pick it back up again? Perhaps “appreciated”? Understand is necessary? See its importance? But not liked. I didn’t expect this reaction, even though rape is a tough subject to […]
