The ten-dollar Founding Father without a father

August 12, 2018 by KimMiE 8 Comments

My first CBR 10 Bingo entry: Not my wheelhouse! I don’t read much history and I don’t read many biographies; an historical biography might be an actual first for me. I confess, I was swept away by the Hamilton Mania triggered by Lin-Manual Miranda’s fabulous musical about the founding father who grew up an orphan, immigrated to America, fought in the American Revolution, started the First Bank of the United States, and died as a result of a gunshot wound administered by Aaron Burr. Let’s […]

Look! Someone has a brain like me!

The Chinese believe that before you can conquer a beast, you must first make it beautiful” Sarah Wilson has been diagnosed over the years, everything from anxiety to depression to bipolar. She’s been on medication, off-medication, happy and functional, manic and gone and suicidal. This is a book for people who suffer from what she refers to as anxiety, but covers any sort of mental health issue where you feel like your brain doesn’t mesh with life. This book is less a treatise on how […]

So I feel a lot of ways about this book, which is basically the opposite of the premise of the book, but what are you going to do? To begin with, I think the authors’ stated premise of the book is both valiant and worthwhile: “to turn your bullshit wish into a goal that can actually be achieved.” That sounds good, right?  Sounds… so much better than endlessly trying to figure out why a thing is happening, or how you can prevent bad things from […]

A fascinating oral history of Star Trek, the first 25 years.

August 2, 2018 by narfna Leave a Comment

This is a long book: 500 plus pages of behind the scenes drama gleaned from new and historical interviews from the cast, crew, and creative minds behind the making of Star Trek for the first twenty-five years of its history. It didn’t really read like that long of a book, though. I’ve always loved behind the scenes stories, and oral histories are a particularly good format for that. So much room for conflicting opinions. Lots of insight and drama. Lots of gross stories about Gene […]
