All of this has happened before.

“Eddie sat us all down as the cast and went, ‘The show’s going to go for five years. Five years. Every episode is going to be like a movie. Keep your powder dry. We’re in here for the long haul. Nobody’s to make fun of this. There’ll be enough people anyway who want to cut a swath in us some way or rubbish the idea, or they’re not going to be fully on board, because we’ve got this title.‘Battlestar Galactica—that’s a blessing as well as […]

”Joy in every pore”

Hi! We’re lowercasesee (lsc) and NoNeinNyet (NNN) and we joined forces for the CBR Bingo Two Heads Are Better Than One category to review Cary Elwes’s oral history of the making of The Princess Bride. lsc: I like it! Overall, I was utterly charmed, start to finish. NNN: It was great! Just the warmest experience I’ve had with a book in recent memory. lsc: Warm is such a good adjective! There’s just joy in every pore. NNN: All of the cast and crew members interviewed for this oral history clearly still […]

If you’ve seen The Wire, you should read this book. If you haven’t seen The Wire, you should go watch it and then read this book. What are you doing with your life?!   For All the Pieces Matter, author Jonathan Abrams spoke to almost every person involved in creating The Wire, from David Simon and Ed Burns to directors, casting agents, and writers, to almost every actor you could think of. It’s fantastic. There is so much information in here, it could have been five […]

A fascinating oral history of Star Trek, the first 25 years.

This is a long book: 500 plus pages of behind the scenes drama gleaned from new and historical interviews from the cast, crew, and creative minds behind the making of Star Trek for the first twenty-five years of its history. It didn’t really read like that long of a book, though. I’ve always loved behind the scenes stories, and oral histories are a particularly good format for that. So much room for conflicting opinions. Lots of insight and drama. Lots of gross stories about Gene […]
