If a picture is worth a thousand words, how much are gifs worth?

February 18, 2015 by soapyme 6 Comments

So, what did I think of The Infinite Sea? I want to leave it at that, but apparently there’s some stupid word minimum for reviews. Goddamn it. Anyway, a friend saw I was reading this and asked how I liked it. I said, “I’m about 2/3 of the way through and so far, nothing has happened to justify its existence.” She said, “High praise indeed.” But it’s true. The Infinite Sea fails to do what any competent sequel does, i.e. expand the universe and raise the stakes. Off the top of my head, here […]

How to take over Earth in 5 easy waves.

January 28, 2015 by soapyme Leave a Comment

The slew of post-apocalyptic media out there makes me realize how screwed I’d be in the event of an actual apocalypse. I have no survival skills and I’m not familiar with any weaponry. Anyway, I picked up The 5th Wave based on reviews that said it didn’t suck, in fact was quite good, and it had a badass teenage heroine à la Katniss. Were these reviews right? Well, yes and no. Aliens have finally come to Earth, but instead of bringing gifts, they set off a deadly series of events. Here’s a wave-by-wave program to take out the human race: The 1st Wave: Shut down […]

300 Pages of Blah.

January 5, 2015 by scootsa1000 3 Comments

For CBR5, I read — and enjoyed — Rick Yancey’s The 5th Wave, the first book in a proposed trilogy about an alien invasion that threatens all of humanity. This book is the second in the series. And I did not like it. At all. This was 300 pages of nothing. Filler that could have been condensed down to a few chapters. Ugh. We still have the very unlikable Cassie as the heroine in this tale. And suddenly, she’s everyone’s last hope. Other than the fact […]

YA Post-Apocalyptic Time

December 23, 2014 by Rachie3879 1 Comment

The Infinite Sea y Rick Yancey is the sequel to his young adult bestseller The Fifth Wave and another post-apocalyptic YA novel. I highly recommend either grabbing a Cliff’s Notes on the first book or finding a quick summary if you’ve not read it in some time. I failed to do so and I found myself struggling to figure out who the characters in this second book were. I suppose this is the problem with getting into a series before it’s finished. I recall enjoying […]
