They understood their strength, all at once

CANNONBALL!!!! Sorry. I just can’t believe that it happened this fast for me. Back in the olden days of CBR 3,  I read mostly shortish YA books and still struggled to eke out 52 books and reviews by the deadline. Now that I am drunk on CBR 10 early completion power…..let’s talk Naomi Alderman’s “The Power.” The premise itself is very simple.  Young women begin to have the ability to harness electricity and manipulate it. Its source is a mysterious skein located in their collar bones. […]

Star Wars for Adults

Read as part of CBR 10 Bingo: Banned book. The Saga comics have been banned in several states and continue to be one of the most challenged books in public libraries across the nation. I’m not a science fiction guy. I read a little science fiction and a little fantasy but my bailiwick is mystery. I don’t really like graphic novels either. One of them is getting to watch her discover things, like some great books that I read when I was around her age. First up is Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, a dystopian masterpiece. The story of a society, perhaps our own, that has decided that the ideas included in books are dangerous, seems eerily prescient. The floor-to-ceiling view […]

“I hate caring about stuff. But apparently once you start, you can’t just stop.”

Murderbot is on a mission. A mission of vengeance. He’s* determined to bring the corporation GrayCris as much pain as possible, and has a plan to do it. Except he keeps getting distracted by all these pesky humans who need helping all the time; dammit, that’s not his job anymore, and he doesn’t like them anyway! (He sort of likes them.) *I have once again reverted to male pronouns for this character. I give up and surrender to my brain. I honestly didn’t even know […]
