Muderbot and I Share So Much

January 9, 2019 by faintingviolet 9 Comments

Late last year I read Martha Wells’ All Systems Red the first book in her Hugo, Nebula, Alex, and Locus Award-winning, and bestselling series, The Murderbot Diaries. The series features a human-like android who keeps getting sucked back into one adventure after another, even though it just wants to be left alone, away from humanity and small talk. Its perfect day is holed up somewhere dark and quiet with its entertainment feed. I can relate. I travel the last two weeks of the year to […]

This series is so great, I can’t recommend it enough.

And the final Murderbot adventure is over. Well, not final, I guess, since there is going to be a Murderbot novel in 2020 (hooray!), but final FOR NOW. The initial arc of Murderbot becoming a person has concluded. We come full circle in Exit Strategy, with Murderbot traveling back to rescue Dr. Mensah, and teaming up with the initial group of humans from All Systems Red. Murderbot’s irrational grudge against Gurathin continues to give me life: “I don’t want to be a pet robot.” “I […]

Murderbot is on a mission. A mission of vengeance. He’s* determined to bring the corporation GrayCris as much pain as possible, and has a plan to do it. Except he keeps getting distracted by all these pesky humans who need helping all the time; dammit, that’s not his job anymore, and he doesn’t like them anyway! (He sort of likes them.) *I have once again reverted to male pronouns for this character. I give up and surrender to my brain. I honestly didn’t even know […]

Murderbot strikes again, is even more loveable.

Murderbot <3. I feel like just making that one word and its accompanying symbol my entire review, but that would be doing a disservice to the book and also to anyone potentially reading this review who has not yet let Murderbot into their lives. Murderbot is life. Murderbot is love. Just kidding. If Murderbot saw me talking about Murderbot like this, Murderbot would be appalled. Murderbot is all about not dealing with feelings at all costs. Which is too bad, because as a newly free […]
