Don’t fret these books are a couple of gems

January 8, 2019 by BlackRaven Leave a Comment

Biographies are interesting. I figure the author most likely likes the subject, or why write about it? However, lately it seems the same few people are being written: Lincoln, Hamilton, Sonia Sotomayor and Amelia Earhart. Now, this is great. I enjoy learning about them as much as the next person. But how many times can you read about them? Therefore, when someone not as popular or new comes along, I am on it. The Diamond and the Boy: The Creation of Diamonds & The Life […]

The sun and this book are kind of a really big deal

With permission, I have borrowed this line from a Goodreads review (but not this book): “I don’t think that I have any coherent thoughts at the moment.” I feel the same way about The Sun is Kind of a Big Deal. Not because it is sweet or thoughtful, but because I was laughing too hard to think! I have one word for Charlotte’s Bones: The Beluga Whale in a Farmer’s Field by Erin Rounds (and illustrations by Allison Carver), “WOW” But I guess I better expand by saying this is a great book for kids that are into science or a fun way to introduce natural science to all ages. It is told from the point of view of an all-knowing narrator that knows what is happening to the beluga whale, later to be known as Charlotte. She was caught 11,000 years […]

HOW in the world is a book about ROADKILL actually so FREAKIN’ (only I didn’t say freakin’) funny?????

This is my chosen for its cover book. At first, I thought it was a dancing dinosaur. I then wondered why the dinosaur was tip-toeing across the road. I then read the title. Oooo-kay.  This is going to be. Interesting. Hopefully. I was afraid it was going to be very dull and academic. It is not. The author makes sure you are right there along for the journey. She presents her story just as that, a story. The facts are there, but you might be […]
