A sci fi master’s earlier work

March 6, 2017 by Bea Pants 2 Comments

The best way to describe Harlan Ellison’s prose would be “lyrical.” This short collection of stories varies from from a hopeless, post-apocalyptic landscape to the a contemporary California in an emotional spiral after his divorce. Just describing the plot likely won’t hook you. It’s Ellison’s words that do all the heavy lifting in his stories. This collection of stories was published in the late 1960s and Ellison’s views on women tend to reflect this. But this shouldn’t let it deter you from reading one […]

To be fair, the book did not immediately quell my fears. The first part was slow going and had me rolling my eyes slightly at the obvious parody of facegooglespacehoo. Then I burnt my bread. Mostly, the women are in the fantasy section, and I wanted space! So I had high hopes for this one, and they were dashed – dashed, I tell you! There’s a decades-long war going on with some aliens, and an internal coup going on in the military between factions who think the head dude is doing it […]

Hungry Like the Coyote

January 5, 2016 by Melina Leave a Comment

Three months have passed since all of the adults have disappeared and the kids are struggling in the FAYZ (Fallout Alley Youth Zone).  Everyone is starving through previous mismanagement of food and due to other creature evolution.  Let’s just say farming has just gotten a little bit more dangerous.  Tensions are building because Sam, doesn’t have the ability to solve everyone’s problems and is just as frustrated as everyone else because no one else seems to be coming up with any solutions to the numerous […]
