When white women cry, people die

#cbr10bingo So Shiny The only reason I read Beowulf for my last selection was because I wanted to read The Mere Wife, a 2018 novel which I had heard was an innovative take on Beowulf from the point of view of the monster Grendel’s mother, and I wanted to have the epic poem fresh in mind for this. I read Madeline Miller’s Circe earlier this year and loved her imagining of Circe’s point of view vis-a-vis the events of The Odyssey, and initial reviews of […]

A gripping YA fantasy series by an underrepresented author (3 Bingo squares for 3 books!)

I’m slowly working my way through my library’s fantasy collections on Overdrive, which is how I found An Ember in the Ashes, the first book of Sabaa Tahir’s YA fantasy series. My reading goals this year are to a) not buy books (only bought one so far this year!); and b) read more female fantasy writers (I made it to July without reading any dudes, and I read more than I usually do!) So, as I quite enjoy YA fantasy, I added this one to my […]

I love a fun, feminist, anachronistic romance novel and that is something that Tessa Dare delivers regularly. Dare writes what I fondly refer to as Historical Fantasy Romance. There is *some* historically accurate details running through her narrative but they are very thin and often bent to suit her plot needs. In the second outing in the Girl Meets Duke series we’re following Alex Mountbatten, introduced in The Duchess Deal, who makes her living by setting clocks to Greenwich Mean Time. Following a terrible, and […]

Damm, now I’m caught up!

There’s something wonderful about discovering a new series and having the books you haven’t read yet beckoning to you from a future snow day or vacation, creating a nice bit of anticipation that you’re hesitant to lose.  You may have finished with the first adventure but the story goes on.  Much like binge watching a good TV show on Netflix or Amazon (Travelers and Jack Ryan, I’m talking about you!), you both want to consume faster and slow down. This is how I felt as […]
