May 15, 2018 by narfna Leave a Comment

The movie did it better. To be fair, the movie always does it better than the novelization. Novelizations are nearly to a one marketing ploys. But after having read the novelization for Rogue One, I am now spoiled for all future movie novelizations. That book was fantastic. It was a piece of art all on its own, and I nearly liked it better than the movie. This was not that. It was competent. Nothing was wrong. But most importantly, it didn’t really translate; the big […]

Getting to know some new authors in a familiar setting

March 31, 2018 by thewheelbarrow Leave a Comment

There won’t be any spoilers for Star Wars in this review.  This book also contains no spoilers for the movies.   Canto Bight is a new location to the Star Wars universe.  It is a planet that is relevant only because on it rests the city of Canto Bight.  Canto Bight, the place, is Las Vegas and Dubai but more extravagant.  Canto Bight, the book, is a collection of short stories follows a several minor characters, heretofore unknown to the greater Star Wars universe. So, […]

faintingviolet gave me this book right before Carrie Fisher died, and I’m only now not too sad to read it.

February 16, 2018 by narfna 4 Comments

Currently the amount of books I own but haven’t read, including in audio and e-book, numbers around 221. faintingviolet gave me this book in the CBR book exchange in December 2016, two weeks before Carrie Fisher died. Even though I was beyond excited to finally have it in my possession, since it had been on my TBR for years and I’d never gotten around to it, I just couldn’t make myself read […]

Young Princess Leia backstory, thumbs up.

Claudia Gray is three for three with Star Wars books. I’ve been reading Star Wars books for over half my life now (!) and she is probably the best, most consistent author of these books that I have any experience of. She brings such a nice sense of nuance and character depth. And she really gets Leia, as she proved in her adult novel, Bloodline (which is probably my favorite Star Wars book), and as she proves again here in this young adult take on […]
