A May December Romance That Doesn’t Make Me Gag

January 5, 2014 by Sophia 4 Comments

What I Did For a DukeMy plan was to start 2014 off with a nice, important classic: namely, Walden by Thoreau. But then, What I Did for a Duke (2011) by Julie Anne Long became available at my library. Probably no one will be surprised when they hear that I am finished with What I Did for a Duke and only about ten percent done with Walden.

Anyway, I’m very pleased to say that Mrs. Julien and I now have one romance novel that we both really like! I keep reading romance novels: and the ones I really like, she thinks are okay, and then the ones she recommends to me, never really grab me. I thought we’d be forever at odds, but What I Did for a Duke was different. I was entertained throughout the book, and I never got bored–even near the end, which is often a problem.

So glad that you finally found one that you liked. This is my favourite of Long’s novels that I’ve read so far, and from what I’ve read of her work before the Pennyroyal Green books so far, there’s not going to be anything in her back catalogue to compete with this. I was also very impressed with her most recent one – It Happened One Midnight, about Jonathan Redmond. Ian, Genevieve’s idiot brother gets his own book this spring.

I think this one is my favorite, too, although I did like The Runaway Duke–except that age difference was a little more bothersome. I think I’ll have to read this new book about Ian, though.
