I have a number of books waiting on my kindle that I got from the library and need to be read, so I was going to wait and get to Malin’s and Mrs. Julien’s recommendation: Something About You (2010) by Julie James a little later. But then I got sick, and the lure of some comfort reading along with my chicken noodle soup was irresistible.
Having mentioned in a previous review that I am a fan of FBI agents–the hunky, protective type–in my romance novels, I was led in the direction of Julie James, and I was not disappointed. This one was easy to read and pretty light and fun. Although there are killers and danger and such things, these more gruesome bits are glossed over in favor of grand recitations of bachelorette parties and weddings.
I am NOT a lawyer and even I think, “SERIOUSLY?” several times while reading this James series. But Jack is fun and growly so I’m willing to give it a pass. It’s not like the historicals I read are any more accurate, just inaccurate in a different way.
This is the best of the three I’ve read as I think Malin would agree. If you go for another one, I’d suggest Love Irresistibly and continue to tote your willing suspension of disbelief.
Thanks, Mrs. Julien. I’ll look for that one next. As long as I’m entertained, I’m pretty good with the suspension of disbelief. It’s when I’m bored that I start getting nitpicky.
According to James’ author bio, she actually has a law degree and worked as a lawyer before becoming a screen writer and later a romance novelist. I agree with Mrs. J that Love Irresistibly is the second best one of her books. The only one I would actively warn you away from is About That Night. The hero is great, but the heroine is super annoying, and the book is not a lot of fun because of it.
I wasn’t surprised to hear that James was an attorney because a lot of the discussions of the job felt relatively realistic. Sigh, so my library doesn’t have Love Irresistibly. Fortunately, it also doesn’t have About That Night. My choices are: A lot Like Love and Just the Sexiest Man Alive.
Both of those are fun, and I liked them. You could do a lot worse when it comes to contemporary romance, James is one of the very few contemporary romance authors I auto-buy. A Lot Like Love is a rich wine store owner and another FBI agent. Just the Sexiest Man Alive is her first romance, I think, and features an attorney having to coach a movie star (think Tom Cruise level) for his next movie. Both are cute and easily digestible.
