I’m Only a Decade Behind the Crowd on This

March 6, 2014 by Jen K 3 Comments

life of piI bought this book such a long time ago because it seemed like everyone had read it. However, I was hesitant to read it because all I knew was that it was about a boy named Pi that was very religious and ended up on a life boat with a tiger. Despite all the hype, I just didn’t feel much desire to read 300 pages of religious musings. Even the movie didn’t give me any motivation or desire to actually read this. However, I’ve been putting this book off for so long that I finally decided this was going to be the year (actually, I made that choice last year, too, but this year I was going to stick with it).

This is one of my favorite books. I don’t think it is about religion. There’s definitely a religious aspect to it, but Pi is far more secular than religious and the moments when he turns to God are when he’s growing up and discovering things about himself. Even that is not so explicit as some people might want you to think.

On the boat and on the entire journey through the Pacific, I don’t remember him thinking about God or religion so much.

But then, like you said, this all depends on the way that one wants to interpret the novel. It is really flexible that way.. and the ending was just superb!
