As I started this book I told my husband, a Neil Patrick Harris fan as well, I wasn’t sure how this idea would play out. As a kid I’d ruin ‘choose your own adventure’ books my bookmarking parts I wasn’t sure about so I could return to them if I was disappointed in my outcome.
So perhaps I wasn’t the target audience here.
The first night I read through what I could gather was an incredibly condensed, mostly true account of NPH’s life so far. Then I read a couple scenarios that clearly weren’t true. I probably only read 100 pages of a 300 page book. Part of me is tempted to read it cover to cover to avoid missing any fun parts.
I just wished for more information and anecdotes, since so many pages are wasted on fake scenarios (a career as a profession magician, etc) everything else feels like a Cliffnotes version of events.
NPH is a fun narrator and he clearly loves his husband & children, is grateful to his family for their support of his career as a child actor and feels truly blessed for all his sucess. Choose your own adventure just isn’t the right gimmic for a memoir.
Meh. I figured as much.
