A Long Time Ago, We Used To Be Friends

I am fan girling so hard right now. Up until a couple of months ago, I had no idea that the Veronica Mars books had come to fruition. Then lo and behold I start reading reviews on here and I was all,”Waaaaaahhhhh?” Let me tell you a little story of how the first time I saw The V Mars movie, I cried towards the end because I didn’t want to lose her again. I’m mildly psychotic about this fictitious character because we are the same person–ok, only our acerbic wit is the same, otherwise, I wish we’re the same person. Let me not tell you how many times I attempt to binge watch the series to be thwarted by my entire family who are a bunch of philistines.

The book picks up right after the movie leaves off and it’s glorious! Veronica is hired by Neptune’s Chamber of Commerce to find out what happened to a missing spring breaker. Of course, it’s not the fact that she’s missing that they’re worried about but the effect on future Spring Break revenue as the name Natalie Holloway and Neptune keep being thrown around together in national news spots.  When a second girl on Spring Break goes missing,Veronica ends up face to face with someone from her past and the stakes get risen to find both girls and to figure out if their disappearances are related.

The banter between characters, their relationships and the mysteries all felt genuine and true to the Veronica Mars universe. And the best part? Zero Piz! Sorry, no one should’ve ever tried to ship that couple. It was like Veronica was dating a whiny piece of cardboard…but no longer! Veronica and Logan had chemistry in the movie and that chemistry has progressed into something more. We see this as they have entered a long distance relationship while Logan’s stationed on an aircraft carrier.  The difficulty of only communicating via Skype and Veronica’s decision to stay in Neptune rather than become an attorney, plague her as she tries to decide if she’s made the right choices in both areas of her life and  as she begins to understand why she’s driven to be a PI.

Here’s the deal, if you have a huge gaping hole in your heart due to the absence of a spunky, blond detective then these books willfill that void. I avoided talking about the mysteries too much because I am afraid of spoiling, but I will say that I was very satisfied with the cases and how they played out.

As a four time participant and the time Cannonball Read failure, I stand before you ready to kick ass, read books and somehow keep my children clean and sign their homework books daily (well that's never going to happen, so let's hope I can at least read 52 books this year). Teacher of 160 seniors, mom of 3 kids/ two dogs, and wife to one pretty great husband. I need a nap and some Calgon (substitute Calgon with rum) so that I can rinse and repeat this insanity on a daily basis. View Melina's reviews»
