Nostalgia for Bridget Jones

April 7, 2015 by Caitlin_D 6 Comments

Oh Bridget… I felt obligated to read Mad About the Boy from a completionist standpoint. I read the first two novels and saw the movies, it only seemed logical to read the long awaited (was it?) sequel (cash grab)

*Eighteen month old spoiler*

Ok, so Mad About the Boy opens with Bridget in a new dating dilemma over her first boyfriend since the perfect Mark Darcy’s death. I get that Fielding had to kill Mark because no would be sympathetic to Bridget if they had simply got divoriced. But did she have to KILL MARK DARCY???

Bridget has not grown since we last left her, however she now has 2 small children and a fledgling career as a screen writer. She is dating a toy boy called Roxster (because of course), trying to navigate twitter and of course- lose weight.

It is the same old Bridget. Her friends are all the same and there are a few Daniel Cleaver moments (you know, in case Hugh Grant wanted to make himself available for the inevitable film adapatation). It is an unnecessary sequel but it isn’t unenjoyable.

This sounds like a negative review but I did *like* the book, it is cotton candy literature and Bridget’s neurosis is easy to fall back into. I guess I just rather enjoyed thinking Bridget had finally got her happy ending with Mark.

I’m not upset about the spoiler from the previous book in the least, but OMG, she killed him?!?! I don’t think I can read either of these!

I did mean ‘she’ as in Fielding, not Bridget… but yes, Bridget is a widow from the start of the book. Boo

Should not read comments early in morning, my brain was clearly not plugged in. Pretty sure ‘Bridget Murders Mark’ would have made giant headlines in the chick lit world

I really cannot be bothered with this book, but thanks for confirming what I already suspected.

I really, really loved this book, which totally surprised me as I thought I could never forgive her for killing Mark Darcy. I thought it was a lovely examination of grief and starting over. Plus funny Bridget stuff.
