Choose-your-own whatever is clearly gimmicky, but it didn’t really feel like it. Perhaps because NPH is so insanely likable, I just thought, okay, yeah, I’ll go along with this. And it IS interesting — don’t you want to know what it’s like to hang out at Elton John’s house? Well, even if you don’t, I promise you you’ll find it entertaining.
This crazy thing is written in the second person, which is fun, and for the most part you’re not really choosing your own adventure, but rather getting more information about one subject as opposed to another (and in some cases offered the option of reading a crazy-ass alternate universe version, some of which are hilarious).
Overall I found it refreshing and lovely to hear from someone who clearly loves his parents, husband, and children so very much, and who doesn’t want to tell you about how fucked up he is, but instead tell some kick-ass stories and have fun. I had a little trouble with the jumping-around format; it’s a little too haphazard-feeling for literal/linear me, but I rolled with it for the most part.
My one question is this: Why are we not hanging out, Neil Patrick Harris? If you’re reading this you should contact me. We will have fun, and my daughter will babysit your adorable children while we do so.
