These ‘boots are made for killin’.

May 4, 2015 by chatelaine Leave a Comment

Yay for another YA dystopia book! No, really. It was fun, and I zoomed through it.

There’s been a crazy-ass virus that, if you get it and live, does this thing where if you die later of something else, you might just come back to life. Or a version of you might — depending on how long you were dead, you’ll retain some amount of humanness. The shorter the duration between death and “rebooting,” the more human characteristics you’ll have as a Reboot.

Reboots are slaves because they’re super dangerous. Largely devoid of emotion, and virtually impossible to kill, they’re understandably also super valuable to Evildoers.

Our heroine is a “178,” which refers to the number of minutes she was out. So to speak. So she’s cold as a mofo, strong, too, and has killed lots and lots of people in her new job as Slave to Human Bad People. But there’s a glimmer of something in there. And hilarity ensues.

Of course it doesn’t, but it’s pretty cool and fun, and of course there’s intrigue and rebellion, though I did skim rather quickly through quite a bit of it. I thought the romance was kind of nice, but unnecessary. The same thing could have been accomplished with a close, real connection, though we’d already established that was possible between Wren (178) and another character. And of course then we wouldn’t have kissing.

Cliffhanger ending and on to #2.

exasperated mom of teenager, haphazard housekeeper, decent bartender I've allowed reading, once my favorite of all activities, to fall by the wayside in favor of much less enjoyable pursuits. CBR helped me with that once before, plus, y'all are an endless source of fantastic recommendations. 2019 update: So I'm reading more but my CB10 participation was abysmal. It might happen this year. It might not. View chatelaine's reviews»
