My younger brother got this book for our dad, and when Dad finished it he immediately ordered copies for me and the other younger brother. So this book is recommended by a whole family of nerds.
I’m behind on reviews, so here’s the Amazon summary:
“Isaac Vainio is a Libriomancer, a member of the secret organization founded five centuries ago by Johannes Gutenberg. Libriomancers are gifted with the ability to magically reach into books and draw forth objects. When Isaac is attacked by vampires that leaked from the pages of books into our world, he barely manages to escape. To his horror he discovers that vampires have been attacking other magic-users as well, and Gutenberg has been kidnapped.
With the help of a motorcycle-riding dryad who packs a pair of oak cudgels, Isaac finds himself hunting the unknown dark power that has been manipulating humans and vampires alike. And his search will uncover dangerous secrets about Libriomancy, Gutenberg, and the history of magic. . . .”
Very fun. Isaac can pull anything out of any book (as long as it fits – no Crichton dinosaurs or spaceships or anything), so it reads like a bunch of in-jokes for book-lovers, as well as a handy “to read” list, for all the stuff I didn’t get. There are a few plot holes and I had some questions about how the magic worked (you can’t pull living things from books, but vampire books created vampires?) but overall it’s a fun ride with a likeable character and some serious cleverness. Isaac’s boss breeds poodle/chupacabra mixes! I will definitely be checking out the next one.
This sounds exactly like my brand of nerdy. Thanks for the recommendation!
I am reading this currently and quite liking it.
I love these books! And they keep getting better. The third one was my favorite so far.
That’s good to hear! Glad to know we’ve all got good sequels in store for us.
