That is, if Phryne Fisher would ever let herself be murdered or stay in her grave long enough for someone else to solve her murder. Nevertheless, our murder victim in Many Deadly Returns, eccentric, elderly Lady Crystal certainly would have Charleston’ed her way into Miss Fisher friendship back in the day.
It’s the 60’s now and Lady Crystal’s friends have all grown up and become respectable members of society. But they still have a special place in their hearts for her and when she calls saying that she’s going to be murdered, then all the strings of government get pulled. Henry Tibbett is duly dispatched to the Art Deco monstrosity where Lady Crystal currently resides. Tibbett shows up to spend the weekend for Lady Crystal’s birthday celebration. Crystal’s three daughters and their respective spouses will be visiting for the time and certainly one of them will try to kill her. Why is Lady Crystal so certain? Because her dead husband told her. And then, right under Tibett’s nose, Lady Crystal eats it. Literally. She eats some poisonous cake and dies. Except, an autopsy shows no poison. If no murder weapon is found, then did a murder actually occur?
As usual, the journey to the killer is more exciting than the actual destination. Even more so for Tibbett and wife, as they get to travel all over Europe in search of the killer and their exotic means of doing away with Lady Crystal. While murder mysteries always find new and exciting ways to commit the perfect crime, motives aren’t nearly as creative.
