This is sort of an odd book. The characters have arcs and there is definitely a story here, but there isn’t an obvious conclusion. There isn’t just one climax. Even very late in the book, I wasn’t sure where all the threads were going. This isn’t to say I disliked the book. It’s just not like anything I’ve read in a very long time. It’s more literary than anything I’ve read in a while, if that makes sense.
Congrats on your half cannonball!

Oooof. I had originally intended to write about On Beauty, but I guess that didn’t happen.
I remember being equally fascinated and frustrated by this book. I read it after adoring White Teeth, and then hearing somewhere that it was based on Howard’s End. I never quite bought the Howard’s End bit 100%, But I did love the tidbits about growing up in the Boston suburbs, as it was very similar to things I had done when I was a teenager.
I haven’t read anything else by her–I got this as part of my Book Riot subscription. I was so excited about it! I also haven’t read (or seen) Howard’s End. Maybe that would inform my reading better.
I grew up around a slightly different breed of intellectual (scientists on the West Coast), but I think I recognize the sorts of people contained in the university portions of this book, if that makes sense.
Congratulations on completing your half Cannonball!
Thanks!
