Hill of Bones

December 30, 2015 by Walking Widdershins Leave a Comment

Yup, more medieval murders. Relatively short murder mysteries written by folks who specialize in medieval murder mysteries. Super fun stuff!

This one starts way back, with a couple of brothers joining King Arthur in a battle fighting Saxon invaders at the battle of Badon Hill (allegedly, Bath). According to historical records, it took place sometime around 560 CE. A few centuries later, in Bath (a place I’m dying to go), Lady Gwenllian and her husband Sir Symon are summoned to investigate a suspicious death that may have something to do with the battlefield, also called Solsbury Hill (you’re welcome for the earworm).

No one ever wants to spend a night out there, because of the hauntings. Soldiers, priests, actors, everyone heads out there at some point – to solve a murder, to avert one, or just because. The stories leave the medieval period and end up in 2010, with pathologists and archaeologists, arguing over everything they’re finding on the hill. It’s actually pretty interesting stuff.

As an Anglophile, and someone who is a little obsessed with the whole Arthur thing, this was one of my more favorite Medieval Murderer books. Pretty much always entertaining.
