Ok, so I read this book in 2 days. It was fantastic. The subject matter couldn’t have been more up my alley – crime drama / sisterly love / another woman / corruption. This was one of those books I couldn’t put down.
It all starts out with a beloved (by the whole town) coach’s grisly death. Jody – the sister of Anna (who is the main character in this series – which I didn’t even know was a series) is accused of killing him, even though it looks like a car accident. Anna is a DA in DC, and she immediately flies back to Michigan to help her sister. Jody doesn’t really want Anna there, and won’t tell her the whole truth. However, Anna and Jody are the only family each other has. I know I’d go through heaven and hell to help my sister.
There’s a scandal involving sexual abuse, corruption, and spousal abuse, which just makes the whole story more interesting. Nothing is salacious or superfluous.
The best part of this book is how it’s split into the current details of the trial and investigation into the coach’s murder, and Jody’s retelling of the events that led up to the coach’s death. I was riveted to both.
Now that I’m done with this book, I’m going back to book #1 to see what happened with Anna before this trial with her sister (this one is book #3). I just like the way Allison Leota writes her characters. Everyone has some flaws, and some reasons to be liked, just like actual real humans. I’d definitely recommend this book to anyone who likes crime dramas, but also human dramas. I can’t wait to dive deeper into Anna’s life before this!
