The Belcher Family with (free!!) voices in your head

January 4, 2016 by ArtfulSophist 2 Comments

LOUUIISSSE! I swear when I read this comic book anthology’s chapters of Louise’s Unsolved Mysteries and Curious Curiosities, I heard Kristen Schaal’s voice in my head reading along. And unfortunately, Sterling Archer’s voice too, because I cannot separate H Jon Benjamin’s voice from Archer, how much ever Bob tries.

This book is solely for Belcher Family fans. If you haven’t or don’t plan on watching Bob’s Burgers, you will not find this book as amusing as I (a recent convert) did. The Belchers are a sweet, kinda crazy, loving family with three nutty children, a mother with a tendency towards nuttiness (and singing), and a father who might be the only sane person in the city.

The book is mostly stories narrated by the kids:  Tina on horses, butts, her erotic friend fiction, Gene on musicals, his aunt Gayle’s cats and… Narnia?, and Louise on her ennui, evenly mixed with her need for adventure. They are sweet stories, and the illustrations are very true renderings of the TV series’ ethos. There are visits from familiar faces, Mort, Dr Fischoeder, Jimmy Pesto, Sr. & Jr., Teddy and others.

Louise’s shorts are the best, but I might feel that way also because I connect the most to her. Tina’s Erotic Friend Fiction bits are also great, but I felt like the book itself could have done with fewer stories and more serialized arcs. Either way, good fun.

I wouldn’t have bought this book (it was an anniversary gift from the partner). But I am looking forward to picking it up again in a year, just to laugh at the time travel story.

I waaant this. I watched this show before I ever tried Archer and I have the opposite problem. I can’t watch Archer without thinking, BOB WHAT ARE YOU DOING. So I don’t watch Archer.
