I’M FRE—I mean, FINISHED!!!! Yay, I read an enormous Russian novel!!!! Seriously, what was I thinking???
For real, though. I’ve had the stupidest chest cold since last Saturday, and I feel disgusting. I had to work from home and conference with my students via Skype on Wednesday because I was coughing too hard to really make my long commute feasible. And spending my day and night hopped up on cold medicine was not conducive to paying periods of rapt attention to a seriously dense novel. Read the full review on my blog, because I make some highly academic (and pretentious) comparisons. Blame it on the DayQuil.
Loved your review, though 15-year old me would’ve argued with you all day about it.
The connection with Patrick Bateman never occurred to me when I tried reading American Psycho (hated it) or watched the movie (loved it).
Ever read Bulgakov? I’ve been dancing around The Master and Margarita for a couple years now without jumping in.
I made it about half-way through this one once. It’s one my list to re-try at some point. I suspect I may have had a bad translation, as I know that translation can make a huge difference with foreign novels and I was just bored out of my skull reading the book. Maybe I’ll re-attempt it this year.
