I promised an interesting vote, and our Cannonballers did not disappoint, eking out a victory by 5 votes Sherman Alexie’s The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian will be our Young Adult book club choice for September 1.

This book has been on my personal to read list for quite awhile so I am glad it was picked, and the two runners up, The Rest of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness and Exit, Pursued by a Bear by E.K. Johnston will be joining by to read list as well and hope that if your choice wasn’t our final choice, that you’ll make the time to read both and tell us all about it. See the discussion topics to prepare.
I look forward to reading this book and chatting about it with all of you come September 1st. I’ll be posting a Discussion Topics post about two weeks before our group discussion, and as always would love to hear your ideas for topics as well. Visit us here on the group blog or in our Facebook Cannonball Read Book Chat group.
As a reminder, here’s the synopsis of our choice:
- Bestselling author Sherman Alexie tells the story of Junior, a budding cartoonist growing up on the Spokane Indian Reservation. Determined to take his future into his own hands, Junior leaves his troubled school on the rez to attend an all-white farm town high school where the only other Indian is the school mascot.Heartbreaking, funny, and beautifully written, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, which is based on the author’s own experiences, coupled with poignant drawings by Ellen Forney that reflect the character’s art, chronicles the contemporary adolescence of one Native American boy as he attempts to break away from the life he was destined to live.

YAY! I’m glad this was the pick, and I’m looking forward to the re-read. Now, to see if I can locate my copy.
Wahoo! I’ve checked this one out of the library twice and never got to it before it was due. Now I have a deadline!
Just put my request in at the library. This was my vote but all the choices are on my tbr list
Yay! My vote counted! I’m excited to read this one as well because I’ve read a lot of the others already, and I’ve been meaning to read this one forever. I think we’ll get a really interesting discussion out of it. Alexie is always good for that.
YAY! I voted for a book I hadn’t read, but I’m not at all sorry this is the winner. It’s ahmahzing.
For some reason I can’t put a finger on I’ve been grumpy about this book, in an “everyone says I should read it BUT I DON’T WANNA” way, but nothing is as effective as putting a fire under my butt as the CBR book club
Yay for the fact that we have an actual copy already! Huzzah for friends who give us free books!
