Say what you wanna say, and let the words fall out

October 5, 2016 by Caitlin_D 1 Comment

I’ll be honest with you, aside from Love Song and Brave, my knowledge of Sara Bareilles song catalog is very limited. I did know she wrote the musical Waitress but it hasn’t traveled to my city (and my husband probably wouldn’t attend it with me anyway). Despite my limited exposure her memoir, Sounds Like Me, fit my criteria for “vaguely familiar public persona but perhaps not exactly A or B list” level famous. Those are usually the best surprises so I checked out her memoir.

I downloaded the audiobook which she reads (and sings) and it was fairly charming. She’s self deprecating and while she gets a little “extra” in some of her performance (what- y’all don’t work with a bunch of 20 somethings that teach you new phrases?) it was fun. She dished some dirt but didn’t drag anyone through the mud.

Nothing makes me more panicky and rage-filled than the worry that I’ve done something in order to position myself for business over the art

She reminded me, in some ways, of Lindset Sterling. They both suffered from body issues and get a little over excited when recounting the stories of their life to an audience. I’d probably wanna hang with Sara over Lindsey since she drinks and swear though…

If you’re a fan of memoirs without needing to be a fan of the person this is a good one to check out.
